The IPO application process is usually straightforward. But the wait between applying and actually knowing whether you got shares — that part drives people crazy. You applied during the subscription window, the issue closed, and now you're refreshing your broker app every hour wondering if those shares are yours. Here's how to actually check, and what to do if you didn't get allotment.
IPO allotment typically happens 6 business days after the issue closes. If the IPO closed on a Monday, you're usually looking at that following Monday or Tuesday for allotment results. Refunds (for unallotted amounts) follow 1 business day after allotment, and shares credit to your demat account on the day of listing.
Method 1: BSE Investor Portal (Fastest Method)
BSE's dedicated IPO allotment portal is the most reliable way to check. It's updated directly by the registrar and reflects the official allotment status.
- Go to bseindia.com → Click on "Investors" → then "Application Status" OR go directly to: bseindia.com/investors/appli_check.aspx
- Select Issue Type: Choose "Equity" (most IPOs)
- Select the Issue Name from the dropdown
- Enter your Application Number or PAN (PAN works for most)
- Enter the Category: Retail (RI), NII, QIB, or Employee
- Click Submit
The result shows: how many shares you applied for, how many lots you bid for, and whether allotment was successful (YES/NO) along with how many shares were allotted. If it shows "0 shares allotted," your bid amount will be unblocked/refunded.
What you need: Your application number (visible in your broker app or bank UPI mandate confirmation) OR your PAN number.
Method 2: NSE IPO Allotment Check
NSE also has its own IPO allotment check portal, though BSE's is generally more comprehensive for all IPOs.
- Go to nseindia.com → Invest → IPO → IPO Allotment Status
- Select the company name from the dropdown
- Enter your PAN number
- Click Submit
NSE's portal is cleaner and faster for NSE-listed IPOs. Both BSE and NSE portals pull data from the same registrar database, so results should match.
Method 3: Registrar Websites (Most Detailed)
Every IPO has a designated registrar — a SEBI-registered entity that manages the allotment process. If you want the most detailed breakdown of your application status, go directly to the registrar's website.
KFin Technologies (formerly Karvy)
KFin handles allotments for many of India's largest IPOs including recent ones from L&T Finance, Macrotech Developers, and many others.
- Website: kfintech.com → IPO → Allotment Status
- Search by: Application Number, DPID + Client ID (demat), PAN, or Account Number
- You can even download the allotment letter from here if you were allotted shares
Link Intime India
Link Intime is the registrar for many high-profile IPOs including Zomato, Paytm, Nykaa, and several recent mainboard issues.
- Website: linkintime.co.in → IPO/FPO → Public Issue
- Select the company name → Enter PAN or Application Number → Submit
- Shows detailed status including application amount, shares bid, allotment decision
Bigshare Services
Bigshare handles many SME IPO allotments along with some mainboard issues.
- Website: bigshareonline.com → Investor Services → IPO Status
- Enter Application Number and PAN
MUFG Intime India (formerly Computershare)
For IPOs where this is the registrar, visit investorservices.mufg.in and follow the IPO allotment status section.
How to find which registrar handled your IPO: Check the company's Red Herring Prospectus (available on SEBI's EDGAR database at sebi.gov.in) or simply search "IPO name registrar" — it's always disclosed publicly.
Method 4: Check Through Your Broker App
Most major brokers in India — Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, Upstox, HDFC Securities — have an IPO allotment status section directly in their apps. For Zerodha:
- Open Kite app → Go to Portfolio → IPOs
- Applied IPOs show allotment status once announced
For Groww:
- App → IPO → Applied IPOs → Status
This is often the easiest check for most people since they already have the app open. However, the broker app can sometimes lag behind BSE/NSE portal updates by a few hours.
Method 5: Check Your Bank Account or UPI App
For ASBA (Applications Supported by Blocked Amount) applications, your IPO application amount stays blocked in your bank account until allotment. After allotment:
- If allotted: The exact amount for allotted shares gets debited. The rest (if you applied for more lots than allotted) gets unblocked.
- If not allotted: The entire blocked amount gets unblocked — you'll see it available in your account again.
This is the most practical check: if your full amount is still blocked on allotment day, you likely got shares. If it's unblocked, you didn't. Though official confirmation via BSE/registrar is always recommended before drawing conclusions.
What If You Were Not Allotted?
Don't worry — this happens to most retail applicants in oversubscribed IPOs. The refund (unblocking of funds) happens automatically:
- ASBA applications: Amount unblocked within 1 business day of allotment date. No action needed from your side.
- UPI applications (Zerodha, Groww, Angel): UPI mandate gets cancelled automatically. Amount available in your bank account within 1 business day.
You do not need to contact your broker or bank for refunds — SEBI mandates the refund timeline and registrars execute it automatically. If your amount isn't unblocked within 3 business days after allotment, then contact your broker or the registrar.
What If You Got Partial Allotment?
In oversubscribed IPOs, retail applicants typically get allotment through a lottery — you either get 1 lot or nothing (for mainboard IPOs). Partial allotment (getting some but not all lots you applied for) is more common in SME IPOs where pro-rata allotment is allowed.
If you applied for 5 lots and got allotted 1 lot, the amount for 4 lots gets refunded. The 1 lot worth of shares credits to your demat on listing day.
Timeline: What Happens When
| Day | Event |
|---|---|
| IPO Subscription Period | You apply via ASBA/UPI. Amount gets blocked. |
| Issue Close Date | Subscription window ends. No more applications accepted. |
| Close Date + 2 days | Finalisation of basis of allotment (registrar processes all applications) |
| Close Date + 6 business days | Allotment date — results available on BSE/NSE/registrar portals |
| Allotment Date + 1 day | Refund initiation for non-allotted applicants |
| Allotment Date + 2 days | Listing date — shares credited to demat accounts of allottees |
Common Issues and How to Fix Them
Application Status Shows "Invalid PAN"
This usually means you entered your PAN incorrectly (PAN is case-sensitive — all caps). Double-check your PAN card. If the issue persists, use your application number instead of PAN.
Application Not Found in System
Check if you're searching in the right portal. BSE IPOs should be checked on BSE, NSE IPOs on NSE. Also, allotment databases are sometimes updated in batches — wait a few hours and retry.
Amount Still Blocked After 3 Days Post-Allotment
Raise a ticket with your broker and contact your bank's IPO helpdesk. This is rare but does happen with technical glitches. SEBI's SCORES portal (scores.sebi.gov.in) is where you can file a formal complaint if your refund is delayed beyond SEBI timelines.
